THE THING HE LOVES
Yet each man kills the thing he loves is part of a trilogy by Camille Mutel that explores The Place of the Other and gesture as that which binds us to the other.
For this new piece, she continues to follow the seasons and writes a ritual for autumn that is as powerful as it is delicate and pays homage to the animal and the living. She transforms rural gestures, most notably those that kill for food - “harvesting the living” - into choreographic acts. She honors them by seeing them as a part of a cycle from birth to death that all the while truly takes care of life. The two dancers Kerem Gelebek and Philippe Chosson, at times hunters, gatherers or planters, at times the beasts themselves, forge a relationship held to the animal, multiple and respectful. Sometimes executioner, sometimes complicit, savage, or tamed, they construct a space over the course of their passage, marked by their prints and tracks.
In echo with the first opus of the trilogy, Not I, inspired by Japanese culture dear to Camille Mutel where she had encounters in the villages, the scenes are composed of the many variations that pay tribute to the possibility of a renewal, of metamorphosis; the animal and its potential for resurrection.
