CREATING A SECULAR RITE – A STUDY OF GESTURE

For this study, I drew upon the working notes I had made during the winter of 2019 while in residence at Villa Kujoyama. As I was unable to travel to Japan due to border closures, this second phase of research clearly lacked continuity without the actual practice. However, I was fortunate enough to be able to deepen my lines of inquiry through an ongoing dialogue with Dairik Amae, a tea master in Kyoto from September 2021 to December 2022.
These notes represent a research stage in writing a rite that I hope will continue to unfold.
This study was deposited into the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) in 2024.

THE TEA CEREMONY – VILLA KUJOYAMA

My residency at Villa Kujoyama was structured around tea ceremony lessons given by Dairik Amae.
The tea ceremony is an art of gathering together, structured according to ancestral principles. It is designed by a host for their guests - typically between 2 to 5 people. It relies on a series of small, highly codified, ritualized actions and unfolds over an indefinite period of time that can span an entire day. The day, location, time, and duration are integral parts of the dramaturgy conceived by the tea master. It is a democratic art form that views communal living as a practice connecting us not only to one another, but also to our environment.
